July marks National Ice Cream Month. Offering some of the best treats to offset hot summer days. Knowing that ice cream can wreak havoc on your teeth if not properly cared for, we have a few recommendations:
- Maintain a good oral hygiene routine. This will include brushing your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes each time. Flossing at least once per day. Brushing and flossing after each meal is ideal.
- When eating ice cream wait 30 minutes before brushing to avoid damaging the enamel on your teeth.
- Food and drinks that are cold, acidic and/or contain sugar can temporarily soften your enamel and you could brush away your enamel.
- Rinse your mouth with water and this will help to eliminate some of the sugar from your teeth.
- If you have sensitive teeth try:
- Allow cold food and drinks to get slightly warmer before indulging.
- Sip cold drinks from a straw to bypass your teeth.
- Lick ice cream rather than biting into it.
- Use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth.
- If sensitivity persists, see your dentist.
- Flavors and Toppings
- Avoid sticky flavor toppings.
- Non-citrus flavors can be less acidic.
- Drink water after eating to help your mouth to lessen the acids.
